Apparel Tech Pack Checklist: What to Send Your Manufacturer
· 6 min read · Khairay Group
A tech pack is the written and visual specification of a garment. It tells a manufacturer exactly what to make, which means fewer questions, a more accurate quotation and a sample that is closer to what you intended. You don't need a perfect tech pack to start a conversation — but the more of the items below you can supply, the faster a project moves.
1. Technical drawings (flats)
Front and back line drawings of the garment, with construction details called out: seams, stitching, pockets, closures, pleats and topstitching. Add close-up callouts for anything unusual.
2. Measurement chart and size range
List the points of measure (chest, waist, length, sleeve, etc.) for your base size and how they grade across the size range. If you don't have a chart, a reference garment you like the fit of is the next best thing.
3. Bill of materials
- Main fabric: composition, weight (GSM or oz) and any finish
- Lining, interlining and contrast fabrics
- Trims: buttons, zips, snaps, drawcords, elastic, rivets
- Thread colour and type where it matters visually
4. Colours
Give colour references for every component — Pantone codes or physical swatches are the most reliable. Note how many colourways you plan to order, as each one affects minimum quantities.
5. Artwork and branding
- Print and embroidery artwork as vector files, with size and placement
- Neck/brand label design and position
- Care label content for your destination market
- Hangtag design and attachment method
6. Packing instructions
How each garment should be folded and bagged, any barcode or size stickers, and carton marking requirements.
No tech pack yet? Send this instead
- Clear photos of a reference garment — front, back and details
- Key measurements, even if approximate
- Fabric description or a photo of the label from the reference
- Your target quantity, colours and size split
- Branding needs and destination country
That is usually enough for a manufacturer to assess feasibility and tell you what's still needed before a sample.
